IATO writes to PM seeking help to avert financial crisis facing travel industry

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) has written to PM Narendra Modi seeking his help to overcome the financial crisis facing the travel industry since March 2020, which has further been worsened by recent postponement of international flights on account of the third COVID wave in India.

The IATO has sought relaxation in travel norms and financial aid for tour operators till revival of the industry.

Rajiv Mehra, President of IATO, has requested the central government to relax the 7-day quarantine mandate for fully-vaccinated international travellers coming from non-high risk countries and fulfilling all protocols established by the authorities. Such tourists must be screened on arrival and, if showing no symptoms, must be allowed to undertake further journey.

Another important request put up is for financial support to small and medium tour operators to tide over the crisis. This can be done based on the turnover recorded by the operator in 2019-20 and 75 per cent of wages paid in financial year 2019-20, to be given as one-time grant. This grant would not only help stop closure of tour operators’ offices but also save lakhs of jobs.
