IATA clarifies COVID risks on an airplane

International Air Transport Association (IATA) medical adviser Dr David Powell has said that Omicron could increase the risk of COVID infection two to three times on board a plane when compared with other variants.

But even though Omicron appears to be more transmissible than other variants under all circumstances, the IATA has clarified that aircraft cabins remain a low-risk setting for its spread. Passenger seating arrangement, mask usage, and good sanitary processes are just a few tools to remain safe on a plane.

As the number of Omicron cases increases worldwide, IATA advice to travellers remains “unchanged and even more vital”, according to the organisation.
