Venice to charge 5 euros per day to control overcrowding by tourists

Lawmakers in Italy have adopted new measures to control overcrowding of the Venice island this summer. Now all visitors wishing to explore the destination will have to shell out 5 euros per day which will be paid and booked in advance online.

Pre-booked visits will be for day visitors to Venice. Guests who have booked overnight stays, residents and their immediate families, as well as children under the age of six, will be exempt from the tax.

As the world’s first major city to put in place such a tax, Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage City, plans to preserve its attractions with the fees collected, and to reduce the 100,000 people who walk its canals and Renaissance and Gothic palaces every day.

Officials have approved a slew of measures to monitor the flow of visitors, and police will use mobile phone data to establish people’s identities in real-time.
